What data brokers had before AI

Before AI chatbots, data brokers assembled profiles from purchase histories, location data, public records, social media activity, and browsing behavior. These profiles were detailed enough to segment you by income, health conditions, political affiliation, and life events. Companies like Acxiom, LexisNexis, and Experian maintained dossiers on hundreds of millions of people, updated continuously and sold to anyone willing to pay. The profiles were invasive but ultimately superficial. They captured what you bought, where you went, and what you clicked on. They could not capture what you were thinking.

AI gave them your inner monologue

AI chatbots changed the equation. For the first time in history, hundreds of millions of people began typing their unfiltered thoughts into a text box connected to a corporate server. Medical fears they had not shared with a doctor. Relationship problems they had not told a friend. Financial anxieties they had not admitted to a partner. Career doubts, legal questions, parenting struggles — all of it, in natural language, with no filter and no audience except the machine. This data is categorically different from anything data brokers had before. It is not inferred from behavior. It is stated directly, in the user's own words, with context and emotional weight that no tracking pixel could ever capture.

The pipeline from chatbot to broker

AI companies do not need to sell your data directly to brokers. They monetize it through advertising platforms, partnership agreements, and data-sharing arrangements that are disclosed in privacy policies nobody reads. When a company reserves the right to share anonymized or aggregated data with third parties, the distinction between anonymized and identifiable is often meaningless. Researchers have repeatedly demonstrated that anonymized datasets can be re-identified using a handful of data points. A few specific questions asked on specific dates, cross-referenced with other data sources, are often enough to identify an individual in a supposedly anonymous dataset.

What Snowden warned about, but worse

Edward Snowden revealed that intelligence agencies were collecting metadata at scale: who called whom, when, and for how long. The public was outraged. But metadata collection is primitive compared to what AI companies now do with explicit consent. Every AI chatbot conversation is content, not metadata. It captures the substance of what you are thinking, not just the pattern of who you communicate with. And unlike government surveillance, which at least operated under some legal framework, AI data collection operates under terms of service that users accept without reading. The surveillance infrastructure that Snowden exposed has been rebuilt in the private sector, with better data, broader reach, and no oversight.

Privacy policies are not protection

Every AI company publishes a privacy policy. Every privacy policy contains exceptions, qualifications, and forward-looking language that preserves the company's right to change its practices at any time. A privacy policy is not a contract. It is a disclosure document that describes current practices while reserving the right to change them. When Anthropic updated its privacy policy in 2025 to allow training on user data by default, users who had relied on the previous policy had no legal recourse. The new terms applied automatically. Opting out required finding a setting that most users did not know existed.
